Leatherworking has been an enduring tradition within my family, spanning several decades. Originating with my father's involvement in a tannery near Boston during his youth, the legacy continued as he relocated to California in the mid-1960s, where he managed a significant tannery until his retirement.
Surrounded by the tactile sensations and distinct aroma of leather throughout my upbringing, my passion for crafting exquisite leather goods blossomed during my apprenticeship under Leroy C. Ferris, a renowned leather artisan renowned for his work with Hollywood stars. Ferris's expertise extended to crafting horse tack and saddles for iconic characters like Silver in the Lone Ranger, as well as specialized articles for NASA spacecraft. Under his mentorship, I acquired skills in pattern making and honed my craft further through employment at saddle shops and Knott's Berry Farm as a custom leatherworker.
My dedication to the craft also extends to education, as I have had the privilege of teaching leatherworking to children in various settings, including libraries, schools, and most recently, at Ghost Ranch.
In my practice, I predominantly utilize vegetable-tanned leather due to its versatility. This type of leather begins unsealed and can be manipulated through stamping, embossing, or tooling, while also retaining its shape when molded.
The creative process commences with conceptualizing an idea and crafting a pattern from paper or cardboard. Subsequently, the leather is meticulously cut, either by hand or with specialized tools, followed by the application of designs using distinct tools after softening the surface.
Once dried, the leather undergoes staining and sealing with a protective finish, culminating in meticulous polishing of edges and attachment of hardware.
